The Debutante – Leonora Carrington
The Debutante is a surreal and darkly humorous short story by British-Mexican artist and writer Leonora Carrington. It follows a young woman who despises high-society life and befriends a hyena. When she refuses to attend her own debutante ball, the hyena takes her place—with grotesque consequences. The story blends absurdity, satire, and gothic horror, reflecting Carrington’s fascination with transformation and the macabre.
About the Author
Leonora Carrington, a British-born artist, writer, and key figure in the Surrealist movement. Expelled from debutante society herself, she rebelled against convention and moved to Paris, where she became involved with Surrealists like Max Ernst. Her work often explores themes of magic, mythology, and feminist autonomy.
